Fostering Talent and Tolerance

Young activists from Tripoli have been driving change through performances and workshops

The successes our young activists have had in Lebanon’s second largest city have been enormous. One of the first projects Young Cities supported – Farha Taysha – went on to receive national praise for its bold attempt at using street theatre to tackle celebratory gun fire. Since then, our teams have gone from strength to strength, deploying trainings, making documentaries and producing short films to improve youth civic engagement and inter-communal relations.

All our work in Tripoli has been planned and delivered in close collaboration with our local partner, INITIATE, and through support from the municipal Local Prevention Network.

Our Impact in Tripoli

We aim for relevant and strategic impact at scale. Working closely with young people in identifying the needs of their communities and the challenges they face, we ensure that the solutions we support them in developing are targeted and sustainable.

Empowering Young People to Speak Up Against the Normalisation of Violence

In city as diverse as Tripoli, four projects have empowered other young people to overcome cultures that underpin violence.

Young Cities has worked with 24 young people in Tripoli. They have been adept at identifying the cultures and norms that underpin violence in their communities. The four projects that our young activists have developed have seen the empowerment of others to speak up against the dangers of celebratory small arms fire, bullying in schools, fractured societal cohesion between Muslim and Christian communities and the marginalisation of Syrian refugees from social and political life.

Their projects have collectively reached more than 350,000 young people online, as well as gathered around 8,000 reactions and shares; while their offline trainings have helped empower more than 200 young people from the city.

Tripoli Projects

Through mentorship, seed-funding and network-building, we support young people to transform ideas into tangible initiatives that make a positive change in their communities.

Testimonials

“Our campaign was one of the most successful and beautiful experiences of my life. We were able to build good connections with the army and police. People reacted well to the campaign, people liked our performance, people still remember it.”

Without the municipal government of Tripoli, our campaigns wouldn’t have been possible. They have collaborated with our teams  to provide security, necessary permissions and resources to implement their campaigns. Since then other youth have worked closely with the municipality, including the Mayor, SCN Local Prevention Network focal point and local police.
