Dakar Extremism Perception Survey

The Ville de Dakar is working to create the country’s first ever survey to measure people’s perception of extremism.

Research conducted by the Young Cities team showed that youth and municipal stakeholders in Dakar often had different perceptions, understandings and definitions of extremism. It was clear that more insights were needed to examine the extent youth from the city were vulnerable to extremism.

Dakar’s municipal stakeholders worked closely with members of its Youth Volunteer Network to develop the city’s first perception survey on extremism. The research is planned to feed directly into the municipality’s future Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) strategy.

Pilot Tests in the Pipeline

A joint Young Cities-Ville de Dakar team trained four youth in research methodology. This gave them the necessary skills to deploy and monitor the survey across Dakar.

Unfortunately COVID-19 put a hold on the roll out of the survey, which required face-to-face interactions.

The youth team are currently working with Young Cities to plan a pilot test of the survey’s deployment for when conditions there improve.
